Retirement Information

Retirement for full-time employees is through the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System.  Depending on date of hire, employees may be a member of either the now closed Legacy Retirement Plan or the new Hybrid Retirement Plan.  Teachers hired prior to July 1, 2014, are members in the Legacy Plan.  Teachers hired July 1, 2014, or later are members in the Hybrid Retirement Plan. 

Legacy Participants are eligible for service retirement once they meet 30 years of service under TCRS or reach age 60 and are vested.

Hybrid Participants are eligible for service retirement with the rule of 90 or age 65 and vested.  The rule of 90 is age plus years of credible service. 

Employees considering retirement should contact TCRS at 1-800-922-7772, for benefit estimates and questions about eligiblity.  Employees should contact Christy Wolfe in Finance for forms and local deadlines.  Keep in mind, it generally takes up to 3 months for TCRS to process your retirement application. 



Retiring teachers may be eligible for a local Service Incentive Program.  Teachers are eligible to retire under this program when in the school year they have earned 21 years of verified teaching experience and have a minimum of ten (10) years employment in the Jefferson County School System.  Teachers must complete the semester of the school year in which they reach their eligibility.  The deadline for this program is January 15 of the school year in which the teacher intends to retire.  

Service Incentive Application



Teachers who leave the School System in good standing, may be eligible for the Sick Leave Exit Option.  The Board shall offer an incentive of $25 per day of accumulated sick leave (earned in Jefferson County only) if application is received by January 15 of the school year in which he/she intends to retire/resign.  The incentive becomes an option only after ten (10) consecutive years of service in the Jefferson County School System.
